Are Bernedoodles Hypoallergenic?

Are Bernedoodles hypoallergenic? Yes, sometimes they can be if you get the right one. They need to inherit this trait from their Poodle parent but if they do they will be hypoallergenic.

But first, we will explore what a Bernedoodle is, then uncover the meaning of hypoallergenic and what causes an allergic reaction. Lastly, we will look at what would make a Bernedoodle most hypoallergenic.

Are Bernedoodles Hypoallergenic?

Let’s Take A Look At Bernedoodles

What is a Bernedoodle anyway? Bernedoodles are a designer breed. They are a mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodles.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are strong, good-nature, and calm. This breed requires a minimum of 30-minutes of exercise a day.

They love to do outdoor activities with their people. Bernes Mountain Dogs do well with positive, early training and socialization.

They are eager-to-please. This breed does require weekly-daily brudhings. They are considered to be very heavy shedders.

Poodles are proud, active, and very smart. This is a high-energy breed. They require daily walks, jogs, and play sessions.

Poodles do well with training and are suited to learn and participate in all kinds of doggie competitions.

Poodles should be brushed daily or have their fur trimmed very short. Poodles shed very little and are considered hypoallergenic.

So, we can expect that a Bernedoodle will be an active dog, that is easy to train and loves to be with his people. Since Bernedoodles are mixed with poodles we can assume that they may be hypoallergenic.

What Does Hypoallergenic Mean?

Hypoallergenic means that the dog is less likely to cause an allergic reaction, not that he will cause no allergic reaction.

So, even the adorable Bernedoodle may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

What’s the Cause of an Allergic Reaction?

All dogs create proteins called Can f 1 and Can f 2. These proteins are responsible for producing the allergic reaction that some people face.

These proteins are found in the highest concentrations in a dog’s saliva and urine. It is also found in a dog’s dander. Fur can also cause allergic reactions because dander can get stuck to the fur.

Choosing the Most Hypoallergenic Bernedoodle

To get the most hypoallergenic Bernedoodle two types are best. A first-generation Bernedoodles may be a good choice.

First-generation means that the Bernedoodles parents were a Poodle and a Bernes Mountain Dog. With this, the puppies will be at least half poodle.

Another option would be a Bernedoodle that’s parents were a Poodle and a Bernedoodle. This results in puppies that are 75% Poodle which should result in a puppy that is even more hypoallergenic.

What you do not want is a Bernedoodle that has parents that are both Bernedoodles. This can result in a toss-up as to how hypoallergenic the puppies will be.

Conclusion

So, are Bernedoodles hypoallergenic? Yes, they can be! This is because Bernedoodles are mixed with Poodles and Poodles are hypoallergenic.

Just because Bernedoodles are hypoallergenic does not mean that they will not cause an allergic reaction. For the most hypoallergenic Bernedoodle be sure to get a puppy who had one parent that was a Poodle.
