Are Rottweilers Good Dogs?


A question is often raised, are Rottweilers good dogs? Are they good with children? Will they be a good house pet for my family and me? 

Are Rottweilers good dogs? Yes if trained correctly they can be very good dogs. Due to their size it’s very important they get proper training.

Rottweilers are a medium to large size dog. They reach up to around twenty-four to twenty-seven inches in height. They will also get to weights of about one hundred and ten to one hundred and thirty pounds. 

They have black coats with touches of rust and other colors. They also need occasional grooming and will have seasonal shedding. They should have docked tails as well.

Rottweilers Health

Rottweilers have a life span of eight to twelve years. Rottweilers need exercise and can develop many illnesses. 

They just like any dog can get many illnesses like cancer, but they can also get hip and elbow dysplasia. They are medium to high energy dogs and need to have workouts daily. At least two of them.

Rottweilers as a Family Dog

Rottweilers are very affectionate and loyal to their family. Meaning they will tend to follow their favorite person room to room. They are very good with children and other dogs, but just like all dogs should still be supervised in everything they do. 

They are social dogs and should be around people and other dogs if possible. They are also known to have destructive behaviors due to boredom or anxiety.

They are also in the top ten smartest dog breeds but do to that intelligence they can be more sensitive than other dogs. Sadly they are considered a liability by insurance companies due to being labeled a “bad breed”

Rottweiler Behavior

The American Kennel Club describes them as a breed that is a bit clownish with a loving nature.

But they are also as previously mentioned loyal and will be wary of any new or unfamiliar people in the house, because of this you want to make sure you pick a puppy that is friendly, to begin with from friendly parents. 

They typically enjoy the company of children and other dogs in the house and tend to also be a very self-confident breed. They can quickly switch from a calm manner to aggressive at the drop of a hat if they feel the switch may be necessary to protect the family or territory.

Rottweiler Training

Rottweilers can be trained to do many different things thanks to their nature. From being a police dog all the way down to a therapy dog.

However due to their desire to please coupled with protective natures they can also learn aggressive behaviors. Make sure to teach any aggressive behaviors out of the puppy before it grows up to make sure it grows into a calm well-mannered dog.

Are Rottweilers good dogs? The question we sought to answer. Rotties are very good dogs if trained correctly and taken care of. You just need to make sure they don’t learn bad behaviors and your Rottweiler will act as a good dog.
