Are Schnauzers Hypoallergenic?

Schnauzers are widely regarded as some of the best pets to have due to their friendly nature, eagerness to please, cuteness, and being easy to train.

Are Schnauzers Hypoallergenic? Yes, there are 3 types of Schnauzers and they are all hypoallergenic.

For those who are cursed with allergies to their pets, and looking for dogs that will cause the least frustration, a schnauzer is in fact a hypoallergenic dog breed.

Why Are Some Dogs Hypoallergenic?

There is no one perfect, non-allergy-inducing breed of dog in existence. There are however multiple hypoallergenic breeds that have a very low trigger for allergies.

People often wrongly believe that allergies are caused by dog hair (dander). This isn’t exactly the case though. The allergens reside in a dog’s saliva and urine.

When dogs groom themselves, the proteins that contain these allergens are spread over a dog’s coat.

When the dog sheds the dander floats around, and when inhaled, triggers an allergic reaction in certain people.

All dogs have saliva and urine, therefore no dog is immune to the possibility of inciting allergies.

But a dog that sheds less frequently, releases less dander with the allergens, making it an easier pet for owners with allergies to handle.

Dander can settle in eyelids causing itchy irritated eyes, they can cause a stuffy or runny nose, headaches, coughing, sneezing, skin irritations, and even asthma.

Are Schnauzers Hypoallergenic?

There are various forms of schnauzers. The standard schnauzer sheds rarely, so with regular brushings and grooming, these dogs can mostly remain allergen-free.

A miniature schnauzer sheds even less than a standard schnauzer, so from an allergy perspective, the miniature version is even less concerning.

All it requires is general grooming, preferably outside, away from windows of the home. It could also be well served with periodic haircuts to maintain it potentially unruly coat.

The giant schnauzer is slightly different. These are bigger dogs, at times weighing as much as 90 pounds, so their fur tends to retain allergies more prominently.

Yet, they are still classified as hypoallergenic as they shed rarely, have low dander levels, and generally do not drool.

A dog who is a drooler produces more saliva that can distribute the allergens, so a dog that is not, immediately allows for less possibility of an allergic reaction.

Great Pets

When taken into account their delightful nature, ease of training, and very low levels of inducing dander and drool, it is no wonder that the schnauzer is one of the 10 most popular dogs out there today.

They have also been bred for chasing vermin, so if you have a mouse problem, the schnauzer is a great pick up.

Schnauzers seldom have any serious health issues and need to be groomed about once daily making them a low maintenance pet.

They do have the energy they need to get out, as is the case with most dogs, so regular exercise servers them well.

Hopefully, this information sufficiently answered your question regarding if are schnauzers hypoallergenic.

Many people fall in love with their adorable, sweet nature and irresistible cuteness. Knowing that the chances of them triggering your allergies are low however, is a key additional benefit.
