Are Dalmatians Hypoallergenic?

A Quick Look at Dalmatians:

Dalmatians are smart, outgoing, and dignified. Their historical job was to be a “coach dog.”

This meant that they trotted alongside coaches and other horse-drawn vehicles. It was the Dalmation’s job to keep an eye on the horses when they were unattended.

Dalmatians are high-energy dogs that thrive on plenty of exercises. They enjoy running alongside a bicycle or going for a jog or run with their owner.

This breed can get into trouble if they are not given enough mental and physical exercise.

Dalmatians can be sensitive, so positive reinforcement methods should be the only method used for training. They do well with early socialization and training.

Grooming is pretty simple. A weekly brushing and occasional bath are all that is need to keep this breed looking sharp.

If you are an allergy sufferer daily brushing might be a better idea.

What is the Meaning of Hypoallergenic?

Hypoallergenic is a label that is put on items or dogs that are “less likely” to cause an allergic reaction.

Most of us assume that hypoallergenic means the item or dog will not cause a reaction. Sadly this is not true.

So, even a Poodle could cause an allergic reaction in some people.

What Causes an Allergic Reaction?

Most allergic reactions are caused by a protein. Dogs produce a protein unique to them. This protein is what is responsible for the allergic reaction that some people suffer from.

The protein is most concentrated in a dog’s saliva and urine. however, this protein is also present in a dog’s dander. The dander can stick to a dog’s fur making the fur a potential allergen too.

All dogs produce this protein, even hairless breeds. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a dog that will not cause an allergic reaction.

How Can I Reduce Dander?

There are some ways to reduce the amount of dander in your environment. These steps will help to reduce allergins:

  • Brush your dog daily, outside
  • Wear a dust mask and gloves whenever you clean areas where your dog hangs out
  • Vacuum daily with a vacuum equipt with a HEPA filter
  • Get a HEPA air filter
  • Swap carpets for hardwood
  • Don’t let the dog on your furniture of bed
  • Swap fabric-covered furniture for leather
  • Get rid of heavy drapes
  • Have a dog-free room or two in your house
  • Never touch your eyes or mouth after petting a dog
  • Avoid letting your dog lick you

Conclusion

I think we have answered the question: are Dalmatians hypoallergenic? In short, the answer is no.

Dalmatians can shed heavily causing their dander to get all over the place! This dander carries a protein that is responsible for causing peoples allergic reactions.

You can take steps to reduce the amount of dander in your environment though.
