Reasons Why You Might Need Dog Pee Pads
You Need Puppy Pee Pads For You New Dog
When you first get a puppy they are going to pee all over your house, including places where they sleep (if they absolutely have to go).
So, some times puppy owners will choose to get pee pads and line their crate with them until they learn to hold their blatter.
It is a much cleaner and easier solution than say using a waterproof dog blanket and having to wash that, while also wondering when they have peed on it and when it is clean.
Or just going with nothing at all and having your puppy roll around in the pee puddle all night until you find them in the morning soaked in their own urine.
So although it may be optional to use puppy pee pads, it is recommended by MANY.
You Have A Senior Dog That Has Bladder Issues
As dogs get older they may develop some incontinence that leads them to urinate in random places around the house.
For some people, pee pads have been a very helpful solution when it comes to making sure your dog has a better place to relieve themself if they can’t make it outdoors.
You Live In An Apartment And Can Never Make It To The Grass In Time
Having a new puppy in an apartment has many unique challenges to it. Of which there is not being able to get your puppy to the grass before they start whizzing all over the stairs or you.
So, some people have been known to train their puppies to pee and poop on these pads so no-one has to stress or race when it comes to potty time.
This same thought process also works for people with senior dogs that live in apartments and need an easy way for their dog to go to the bathroom if they can’t wait.
Your Puppy Is Too Young To Be Out In The Grass
If you happen to get your puppy at a very young age then you might have to keep him indoors until he gets the shots he needs to pee outside.
In which case you would need to set up a dedicated area indoors that he/she can relieve themself daily. For more information on that, it is best to ask your vet.
How Do Pee Pads Work?
Pee pads work in a very simple way, although there are different features in some pee pads that make them work better than the rest.
Basically, your puppy is going to walk onto the pee pad (once they know what it is) and they will do their duty.
For number ones, the pee will soak into the pad, and then it will pass through the surface and into a gel that masks the smell. If the pee pad is of good quality, it will have a leak-proof bottom that prevents the pee from passing through it.
For number twos, there is a reason they call it a pee pad, they aren’t very great for poops. It really will give your puppy a spot to drop a deuce and you can clean it up easily.
Either by pitching the whole pad or bagging it and throwing it into the trash. It won’t be very budget-friendly to throw away your pee pad for every poop though as puppies do A LOT of it.
There is somewhat of a hot debate on this though because you can either bag the poop immediately or wait some time for a cleaner pickup however the smell will get worse.
In my experience, I chose the former, the sooner you pick it up the better. However, I would invest in a dedicated trash can for this as you will be using it for dog pee pads, paper towels, and poop bags.
Should I Get A Reusable Pee Pads Or Disposable Pee Pads?
Advantages To Reusable Pee Pads Or Washable Pee Pads
Primarily reusable pee pads are a great way to save some money because you won’t have to keep buying more of them.
They also tend to look nicer and more presentable so when you have guests over and they see these it can blend in more with your home.
Also, of course, instead of throwing away your pee pads after every day or so of use can simply toss it into the washing machine and have a fresh pad in a couple of hours.
This also means that you will always have a pee pad on hand and won’t have to worry about running out.
Lastly, these are better for puppies that like to chew on disposable pee pads as these tend to be a bit more durable.
TL:DR:
- More Appearance Options
- Might Save You Money
- You Can Wash These And Reuse Them
- Better For Puppies That Like To Chew On Disposable Pee Pads
Advantages To Disposable Pee Pads
First things first there are minimal amounts of cleanup that need to happen here. At any time if these get too messy you can simply throw them out and get fresh ones down in an instant.
Also, you can cover a greater area with disposable pee pads. Although there are some very large-sized washable pee pads available, you have to deal with whatever size you buy.
If you get disposable pee pads you can customize your placement options and your surface area coverage to create the best compromise for you and your dog.
Of course, this also means that you will still have to pluck out the extra dirty pee pads and replace them one at a time.
TL:DR:
- Customize Your Pee Pad Coverage
- Easier Cleanup
- Better For People Who Don’t Want To Spend Time Keeping A Reusable Pee Pad Clean
My Personal Experience
When I used pee pads for my puppy I did somewhat of a hybrid to cover all my bases. For the crate, I used the Pet Parents washable pee pad. I thought it worked perfectly for what I needed in the crate.
For the dedicated spot that my puppy could use, I used a combination of different brands of disposable pee pads. Mainly because I would lay down 9 of them and let him choose which works best for him.
Because as you may already know to corral a puppy into one small area to pee is quite difficult so the more room you give them, the better.
